At eighteen, James “Jim” Nutt leaves Bakersfield, California, carrying a duffel bag, a dangerous temper, and a warning from the father he desperately wants to make proud.
Sent to Cold War Germany and nicknamed “Private Insane,” Jim encounters brotherhood, racial tension, unexpected freedom, and consequences that will test everything he believes about strength, loyalty, and becoming a man.
Inspired by the extraordinary true story of the author’s father, **Private Insane: A Coming of Consequence** is a powerful coming-of-age novella about fathers and sons, family, race, survival, and the moments that transform a boy into a man.
